MALAGA, SPAIN.- CAC Málaga, Málaga's Center for Contemporary Art, presents Matthias Weischer for the first time in Spain, one of the most important figures of The New Leipzig School and a disciple of David Hockney. With "In the Space Between" the internationally acclaimed painter in the midst of a career boom presents his current work, in transition, for the first time following his year long stay in Villa Massimo, Rome. Once again, this exhibit fits into the city of Málaga's overall goal of furthering a cultural agenda to help achieve its goal of becoming Europe's 2016 Culture Capital.

"In the Space Between" is the public's first viewing of what can be considered the “world premiere” of never before seen paintings of gardens and landscapes, the result of the artist's transformational studio work following his year long stay in Rome. The exhibit will include his trademark paintings of interiors that have brought him fame, recognition, and international prestige.

Weischer (Elte, Wesfalia,1973) often paints artificial, sometimos claustrophic interior spaces that respond largely to mental constructs and that occasionally bring to mind 17th century halls of wonder filled with a variety of objects.

Everything fits into a Matthias painting, which often seems to draw upon 50s and 60s interior decoration magazines. The human form, appearing fantasmagorically or on occasion fragmented, the reticles, common elements in classical painting, are also equally present in his claustrophobic interiors and his dreamlike exteriors. Nothing is out of bounds for this German artist who focuses on a painting's bi-dimensional plane, avoiding symbolism while still delving personally and obsessively into space, where objects exist merely as points of reference.

Matthias Weischer was 16 years old when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 and later he decided to go to school in Leipzig, which had been part of the German Democratic Republic, where professors like Arno Rink and Bernhard Heisig, trained in the school of social realism, taught even before the end of the Cold War. Thanks to them, Weischer was able to train in the classical and traditional workshops where he learned traditional pictorial technique in order to focus afterwards on the merits of the painting itself and delve into the relationships between space and objects that so define his work.

Matthias Weischer, drawn to figurative painting, decided to train at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, moving afterwards to Berlin with former classmates to found LIGA, a gallery where they could exhibit their work to the art world and public at large.

In 2003 the Kuntsmuseum Wolfsburg organized the "Painting Pictures" exhibit to show the works of these new painters and the following year, for the International Fair of New Art in New York, German Gallery

Association (BVDG) created the “Young German Art” show to bring these German artists to a global audience. Thanks to the Rolex Grant, Weischer was able to spend a year under the tutelage of David Hockney and immediately afterwards the German Academy awarded him one of the most important prizes to which a German artist can aspire, an opportunity to study abroad, specifically a year in Villa Massimo along with nine other artists, including architects, composers, writers, and painters. Weischer took advantage of the opportunity to make exteriors a new theme in his work, now on view for the first time at CAC Málaga.

He currently lives and works in Leipzig and he is considered the most important figure of the Leipzig School's new generation of painters (CAC Málaga already organized a first ever solo exhibition in Spain for fellow new generation artist Neo Rauch). Matthias Weischer, in a rare gesture of generosity, has created a special edition engraving for CAC.
