Carolee Schneemann Named 2008 Stan Brakhage Vision Award Winner

DENVER, CO.- The Starz Denver Film Festival (SDFF) announced that Carolee Schneemann, a preeminent multidisciplinary artist, will receive the 2008 Stan Brakhage Vision Award during the program "An Evening with Carolee Schneemann," sponsored by the Denver Art Museum, on Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Denver Art Museum's Lewis I. Sharp Auditorium. The event will include a screening of some of her most provocative and eclectic shorts, including her latest, Infinity Kisses-the Movie.

Phil Solomon, the recipient of the 2007 Stan Brakhage Vision Award and associate professor of film studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will present Ms. Schneemann with the award.

Initially an abstract expressionist painter, Schneemann has tackled all media, including photography, film, video, installation, performance, various forms of print and the spoken word. Her work has been featured in major museums and galleries, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and the London National Film Theatre.

"Throughout her career, Carolee Schneemann has dared to take on provocative subject matter and pursue truth through her art," said Ron Henderson, SDFF co-founder. "Her disregard of consequences and her affinity for the unmentionable exemplify the audacity of Stan Brakhage. She is more than deserving of this prestigious award."

The Stan Brakhage Vision Award is presented annually to film artists whose work celebrates Brakhage's courage, boldness, uncompromising integrity and vision. Throughout his 50-year career, he made almost 400 films—most of them shorts and all intensely personal. His final film, Chinese, he completed in bed before he died on March 9, 2003.

2008 SDFF DETAILS - All regular screenings will take place at the Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli on the Auraria Campus, the home for the Denver Film Society. Opening Night (Nov. 13), Big Night (Nov. 15), Saturday-at-the-Movies (Nov. 22) and Closing Night (Nov. 22) will take place at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, located in the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Special screenings will be shown in the King Academic and Performing Arts Center on the Auraria Campus.
