ARNHEM.- Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem presents today Running force. Albert Van Der Weide, on view through March 22, 2009. Albert Van Der Weide (Meppel 1949) is both fascinated with and concerned about structures of power and the use of symbols of power in society. The oneliner ‘All power to art’ has appeared regularly in his work since 1986. Through his goal-oriented, innovative methods of working, this Arnhem-based artist lets us witness historical events, injustices, passions, and obsessions.

Van Der Weide believes that art has properties that reveal the roots of life in detail, thus creating obligations and engagement. In the 1970s he staged performances in the Netherlands, Germany, and Poland about South Africa’s apartheid regime. Sometimes he demands active participation from the audience. According to Van Der Weide, the will to power manifests itself at all levels in life. In addition to performances and his two ballets for the Introdans foundation, Van Der Weide expresses this theme in installations, photo montages, silkscreen prints, and sculptures which literally depict the seizing of place and position. At the start of the 1990s, he made a series of paintings entitled ‘Running Force.’ Factual information about money, share prices, and profits is combined with masks and amorphous figures in bright colors. Recent events have made the paintings seem topical once again. In his recent drawings and aluminum sculptures, masks and faces alternate. With holes where eyes should be and a smirking mouth, Van Der Weide’s masks evoke a mixture of violent and loving life, as well as the uncertainty of death. The “Met&Voor” (“With and for”) project was put together especially for this exhibition with the involvement of the staff of the Museum voor Modern Kunst. Van Der Weide solicited from the staff ‘favorite statements, quotations or slogans about art’ which he has worked into a series of drawings.

‘Running Force’ reveals the variety of themes and techniques that Van Der Weide has used in his work from 1977 to the present, including the arresting and controversial one-liner ‘all power to art,’ which will be displayed in a prominent and unexpected place. In addition, Albert Van Der Weide’s performance “24 01 2009” will be staged on Saturday, January 24th, at 3:30 p.m., in collaboration with Armeno Alberts and Petronella van der Weide.
