Fuller Craft Museum Announces Additional Programming Related to Exhibition: Craft in America



BROCKTON, MA.- Fuller Craft Museum presents the only east coast exhibition of Craft in America–Expanding Traditions, a multi-faceted journey into the origin and continuation of American craft traditions. This exhibition is associated with the three-part Peabody Award-winning and Emmy-nominated PBS series of the same name, which first aired nationally in 2007. The exhibition opens on Feb. 26, 2009 and runs through May 25, 2009. This will be the final stop on the two-year national tour of Craft in America.

Fuller Craft has created several programs related to Craft in America. All events are at Fuller Craft Museum.

Saturday, Feb, 28, 2 p.m.

TALK: Woodworker Mira Nakashima-Yarnall will speak about her own work and the classic designs of her late father, studio furniture maker, George Nakashima. Both father and daughter have work in the Craft in America exhibition. $10, $7 for members and students with valid ID.

Sunday, March 1, 2-5 p.m.

RECEPTION: Join us we celebrate the opening of Craft in America–Expanding Traditions. Book signing and special presentation from the creative minds behind Craft in America TV series, catalogue and exhibition; Carol Sauvion, Jo Lauria, and Steve Fenton. Free with paid admission.

Sunday, March 29, 2 p.m.

FILM: Maloof (2008). Film star Rene Russo narrates this documentary about her friend, 93-year-old master woodworker Sam Maloof. It features testaments by friends and fans like President Jimmy Carter and The Smithsonian’s Jeremy Adamson. Introduction and dialogue with Jonathan Leo Fairbanks, Consulting Art Historian for Craft in America and Curator of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture, Emeritus, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. $10, $7 for members and students with valid ID.

Sunday, April 26, 7 p.m.

TALK: Internationally renowned textile artist Jack Lenor Larsen, whose work is included in Craft in America, talks about his book The Craft Collections at LongHouse Reserve. Book signing follows. $10, $7 for members and students with valid ID.

Wednesday, May 6, 7 p.m.

FILM: Maloof (2008). Introduction and dialogue with Miguel Gómez-Ibáñez, Executive Director of the North Bennet Street School. $10, $7 for members and students with valid ID.

Sunday, May 17, 5 p.m.

Craft in America—Expanding Traditions

Well-known artists such as Sam Maloof, Warren MacKenzie, Judy Kensley McKie, Garry Knox Bennett and Dale Chihuly are just a few of the pioneers of craft represented in this comprehensive exhibition of approximately 150 objects. Craft in America at Fuller Craft spans a period from pre-Civil War America to 2007, with an emphasis on 20th and 21st century craft. Objects and media include baskets, quilts, ceramics, furniture, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal and wood.
