RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA.- The Contemporary Art Museum of North Carolina (CAM) is searching for a new Executive Director. Denise Dickens, CAM’s curator and Executive Director for the last twelve years concluded her tenure on October 18, 2002 following the premiere of the CAM exhibition Jack Saylor: Sky Land Sea. The exhibition is being shown at the Betty Ray McCain Gallery at the BTI Center for the Performing Arts through January 8, 2003.

While at CAM, Dickens curated over 35 exhibitions and public art projects including George Bireline: Decade 1984­1994, Alfredo Jaar: Let There Be Light and Robert Rauschenberg: 1971­1991 / Animals and the Other Themes. Their success proved that there was a place for contemporary art in North Carolina.

"CAM is dedicated to continuing our reputation for excellence in bringing regional and nationally recognized artists to the Triangle," explains Frank Thompson, CAM’s Chairman, "Our biggest challenge is to create a permanent home for contemporary art in our area."

Since 1997, CAM has operated as a "museum without walls", programming exhibitions and educational outreach programs across the Triangle until it relocates to its new home. CAM has a capital campaign underway to renovate a building at 409 West Martin Street in Raleigh’s redeveloped warehouse district. "CAM’s new building and continued mission to explore the art of our times will add a new dimension to downtown Raleigh and the Triangle," says Mr. Thompson.

CAM’s Board of Trustees believes the revitalization of downtown Raleigh needs the leadership of a viable and strong arts community to attract new involvement and participation by Triangle residents. Besides a focal point for visitors, the new Museum will increase CAM’s capacity to partner with other community organizations in presenting exhibitions, educational programs, performances and special events. "We know that CAM and contemporary art can play a significant role in bringing people and businesses back downtown," explains Mr. Thompson.

CAM hopes to have a new Executive Director in the next six months to continue to expand the role that contemporary art will play in creating an exciting downtown environment for Triangle residents and visitors.
