SLEAFORD.- A youth mob composed of thousands of teenagers is due to descend upon the rural Lincolnshire town of Sleaford as part of a new art work by artist Kelly Large.

The artist who is particularly interested in the 'theatre' of crowds says, "These unpredictable and apparently random large scale movements of people have always fascinated me. I'm very excited about this new work. I think that as a society we have an uneasy and agoraphobic relationship to a gathering crowd."

The event will be filmed from a small nonrigid airship or blimp positioned high above the moving and densely packed mass. Every participant will be wearing a fluorescent jacket and it is hoped that the resulting film footage will look like a volcanic lava flow or tidal wave of adolescents moving through the grey streets of Sleaford's town centre.

The artwork will highlight a number of issues not least the relationship between generations. The event will take place on an undisclosed date in late April. The artist is deliberately keeping the date secret because she says, "an audience would interfere with the look of the film, however the police and relevant authorities have been informed."

Beacon Art Project, who are well known for commissioning unique and high profile contemporary art events in Lincolnshire http://www.beaconartproject.com have invited the Home Secretary Jackie Smith and the broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough to attend the premiere of the resulting film which will be screened on June 19 2009 at The Hub National Centre for Craft and Design, Sleaford, Lincolnshire, however both have politely declined the invitation.

Kelly Large has been working on this project entitled 'Our Name is Legion' since she was commissioned in 2008 by Beacon Art Project to work as artist in residence at Kesteven and Sleaford High School. The initial idea came about when she observed the routine journeys and daily fluctuation in the volume of people moving through the town.

Kelly Large is an artist based in London. She exploits distribution mechanisms such as FM radio, publishing formats and curatorial mediation to critically scrutinize the relationship between the production, transmission and reception of art. Recent projects and exhibitions include: ‘This is the Gallery and the Gallery is Many Things’, Eastside Projects, Birmingham (2008); ‘Me, Myself and I’, The New Art Gallery, Walsall (2008) and ‘Strategic Questions Venice’, 52nd Venice Biennale (2007).
