NEW YORK, NY.- The Museum of Modern Art announces MoMA MiXX, a new series hosted by the Museum’s young patrons group, The Junior Associates, premiering Saturday, September 26, 2009. An evening of cocktails and dancing at the Museum from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, MoMA MiXX uniquely pairs together major artists with world-renowned musicians or DJs, with each featured performer spinning a set of music that night. The Agnes Gund Garden Lobby will be transformed into a dance floor, and MoMA’s Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium will serve as a lounge area complete with bars. The money raised benefits the exhibition programming for The Museum of Modern Art and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center.

The inaugural MoMA MiXX event pairs artists Mickalene Thomas and Derrick Adams with Hercules and Love Affair, the musical project of New York based DJ Andy Butler. New York-based artist Mickalene Thomas is known for her elaborate paintings adorned with rhinestones, enamel and colorful acrylics. Her depictions of African American women explore notions of black female celebrity and identity while romanticizing ideas of femininity and power. Derrick Adams’ work combines a variety of mediums to craft an animated world populated by pseudo-educational characters. A preoccupation with consumer objects and their presumed demographic posturing, particularly in an urban context, informs his practice of reconfiguring familiar items to expose their persuasive and often duplicitous nature. Hercules and Love Affair’s eponymous debut album was released in March 2008 by DFA Records and includes the hit single “Blind” which was named the 2008 Song of the Year by Pitchfork Media. The evening also features DJ sets by Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter, resident DJs of the Mister Saturday Night series. With Doug Singer, Harkin and Carter also produce Sunday Best, the outdoor summer party by the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn.

Two additional MoMA MiXX events are scheduled for January and April 2010. Tickets for each event are $75 per person (or $200 for the first three events), and include an open bar. Tickets can be purchased in advance at www.moma.org/momamixx.
