MIAMI BEACH, FL.- ArtCenter/South Florida (“ACSF”) is proud to present X-Ray, a radiating exhibition by artists Bill Burke, Jacek Kolasinski and Orlando Jacinto Garcia. Sculptures by Burke and video images by Kolasinski serve as the backbone of Garcia‘s haunting sound composition. Combining stimulating visual imagery and evocative sonic explorations, X-Ray produces a series of invigorating sensations. The opening reception slated for January 9, 2010, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m (800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach), coincides with Lincoln Road’s monthly First Saturday Art Walk. X-Ray is free, open to the public, and on view through February 21, 2010.
Much like examining an x-ray, Burke has created a showcase whereby organic matter is observed through glass encasements or is fossilized in lead. In his obsessive desire to stop time, the artist found himself experimenting with the relationship between biological specimens and aquatic life, natural fossils and religious icons. The transitory nature of the work’s materials have sent Burke hunting for fish, rose petals, orchid blossoms, small animals and many other forms of organic matter. They reveal the beauty of nature’s life cycle and their inevitable finality.
Conversely, video loops created by Kolasinski depict a variety of slowly-melting, frozen, biological specimens in an attempt to animate stillness. The gradually unfolding images document constant change, albeit almost unnoticeable, while the focus on melting ice is a metaphor for temporality.
Burke and Kolasinski’s work together influenced the concept for the music. This installation of organic sculpture and video harmonize with Garcia’s electro-acoustic composition, which is played on the glass harmonica. Titled “The Glass Cathedral (La Catedral de Cristal)”, Garcia developed this piece by processing digital samples of his previous work, “Llovizna (Mists)”. X-Ray gives observers the opportunity to transcend ordinary subject matter. The combination of sound with glass will allow ArtCenter’s audience to go through light and lenses - it’s an exhibition that’s more than just skin-deep.
