Guggenheim Forum: Beyond Material Worth Launches

NEW YORK, NY.- For the latest installment of the Guggenheim Forum, which takes place February 22–26, the museum has invited thinkers from a variety of fields to discuss issues of sustainability and valuation that emerge from art that does away with physical product. Inspired by the work of Tino Sehgal, Beyond Material Worth will provide a platform for examining the great transitions underway in the global economy, which is moving away from materialistic overproduction and self-destructive practices toward more sustainable behaviors, and is mirrored by changes in art and its economies, both literal and symbolic. How do we negotiate this historical pass and the across-the-board shift in values it requires?

Forum participants include Martha Buskirk, professor of art history and criticism at Montserrat College of Art; Juliet Schor, professor of sociology at Boston College; and Simran Sethi, journalist and associate professor at the University of Kansas School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Our moderator and live-chat host is Peter G. Brown, professor in the School of Environment, the Department of Geography, and the Department of Natural Resource Sciences at McGill University and former director of its School of Environment. For our live chat, which takes place at 2 pm EST on Thursday, February 25, Brown and Schor will field questions from visitors to Guggenheim.org in real time.

Visit the Forum beginning Monday, February 22, to learn more and voice your opinions.

Guggenheim Forum is a continuing series of moderated online discussions catalyzing intelligent conversation on the arts, architecture, and design. Several times each year, experts from a variety of fields inquire into and debate topics related to the museum’s exhibition program. The next Guggenheim Forum will take place in concert with the exhibition Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance, on view at the museum March 26–September 6, 2010.
