EASTPORT, ME.- The Tides Institute and Museum of Art (TIMA) announces its 2010 season with new exhibitions, a film/lecture series and schedule of visiting artists.

The Institute’s first exhibition of the season opened on Friday, June 25, 2010, featuring photographs by award-winning Canadian teacher, visual artist, letterpress printer and publisher, Thaddeus Holownia.

Holownia’s work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including most recently, Thaddeus Holownia: The Terra Nova Suite, a twenty-five year survey of his Newfoundland and Labrador work presented by the Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in St. John’s, Newfoundland. During the past 25 years, Thaddeus Holownia has made repeated and extended visits to Newfoundland and Labrador. Throughout these journeys, Holownia’s signature medium, the banquet camera, has been used to document the changing landscape – from ferry’s berth in Argentia, through Gros Morne’s Trout River Gulch and the nickel cores of Labrador’s Voisey’s Bay, to the urban and industrial harbour of St. John’s. The accompanying exhibition catalogue Thaddeus Holownia: The Terra Nova Suite features selections from Giller Prize nominee Lisa Moore and was designed by Bob Tombs.

Holownia’s imagery of Newfoundland and Labrador has also been presented in his publication Arborealis, which, in July 2006, captured an excellence award in design and printing in the book category by Applied Arts Magazine. Arborealis also features a suite of 30 poems by Peter Sanger who drew upon his own experience of living, working and travelling in Newfoundland, particularly on the Northern Peninsula – in response to Holownia’s images.

He has been the recipient of awards from the Canada Council for the Arts, the New Brunswick Arts Board, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the Crake Foundation and the Marjorie Young Bell Foundation. In 2000, Holownia was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He received a Fulbright Fellowship in 2001 and currently, he is a professor and head of the Fine Arts Department at Mount Allison University, Sackville, New Brunswick. This show will be on view through mid July 21.
