NEW YORK.- Christie’s will collaborate with the Center of International Cultural Exchange (CICE), a direct subsidiary of the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China, to present Trans-Realism, a comprehensive exhibition featuring works from prominent Chinese contemporary artists. The collection will be on view at Christie’s Rockefeller Center from September 9th through September 26th, 2010. Spear-heading this exhibition are the Artistic Directors LU Jun, Director of CICE, and FAN Di-an, Director of the National Art Museum of China. It was curated by PAN Qing, a curator at the National Museum of China, in association with coordinators Michelle Loh and Jay Lu. 29 works of painting and photography by 17 Chinese artists will be included in the exhibition. Trans-Realism is part of Christie’s on-going support for initiatives that promote inter-cultural exchange and exemplifies Christie’s commitment to help bring Chinese art to a global audience.

“As sponsor of this event, we are honored to cooperate with the CICE to present in New York works by significant living Chinese artists revealing a vibrant and diverse contemporary art scene in China. They range from the elegant reinterpretation of Realism by YANG Feiyun (b.1954) and XU Jiang (b. 1955), to the modern re-enactment of Realism by XIN Dongwang (b.1963) and YU Hong (b.1966), and finally to the contemporary reconstruction of Realism by WEI Jia(b. 1975) and CHEN Ke (b.1978), ” said François Curiel, President of Christie’s Asia, “This exhibition will take place at the same time as our traditional Asian week of sales in New York, thus giving it maximum exposure. Since establishing offices in Beijing and Shanghai in the mid 1990's, we are proud to have helped collectors in China find the finest works of art in the international market.”

LU Jun, Director of CICE and FAN Di-an, Director of National Art Museum of China point out together: “Although it only gives a glimpse of the contemporary art scene in China, the exhibition highlights the artists’ careful juxtaposition and balance of tradition and innovation, realism and imagination, individuality and society, local and international. We are confident that this exhibition will not only provide a great platform for introducing Chinese contemporary art to an American audience, but also initiate a new chapter in the cultural exchange of the two countries.”

Participating artists are, (in Surname Pin Yin order), CHEN Ke, CHI Peng, CUI Xiu wen, DUAN Zheng-qu, HOU Yong, LI Da-fang, QIU Xiao-fei, SONG Kun, WANG Guang-le, WEI Jia, XIN Dong-wang, XU Jiang, XUE Song, YANG Fei-yun, YANG Yong-sheng, YU Hong, ZHONG Shan.

On September 12th, Christie’s and CICE will host a lecture and gallery preview of Trans-Realism at Christie’s Rockefeller Center. The exhibition will be held at the same time as Asia Week, which is Christie’s seasonal sale of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and South Asian art that takes place from September 14th to 17th at Christie's New York.
