CHICAGO, IL.- Madeleine Grynsztejn, Pritzker Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago, announced today that James Goggin has been named the MCA's new Director of Design, Print, and Digital Media, effective August 23, 2010. Goggin's role is to conceputalize and create a strong visual identity for the MCA, and to lead the implementation of a comprehensive museum design and publishing program.

"James is one of the most recognized and distinctive graphic designers of his generation," said Madeleine Grynsztejn. "He has reached a high level of achievement in the United States and internationally. His approach to integrating the cultural and historical context of design will be essential to creating a unique visual identity for the MCA. James' experience and versatility will make him an outstanding addition to the MCA team."

In 1999, Goggin established Practise, a design studio that created an impressive body of work for a wide range of high-profile clients -- from books, posters, typefaces, identities, and stationery to exhibition design, signage, websites, and motion graphics. He has served as design consultant for Tate Britain and Tate Modern since 2003, and has worked with British Council, Camden Arts Centre, Channel 4, Design Museum, Frieze, Docklands Light Railway, Phaidon, Uniqlo (Japan), Victoria & Albert Museum, and White Cube, among many others.

Goggin is an educator and lecturer at various institutions dedicated to design, including Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem, the Netherlands, and ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has written critical texts and essays on the subject of graphic design that have been published internationally. Goggin received a BA in visual communication from Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication in London in 1997, and a MA in graphic design from the Royal College of Art in London in 1999.
