Contemporary Prints at Ashmolean Museum

OXFORD, ENGLAND.- The Ashmolean Museum at the University of Oxford presents "Contemporary Prints," on view through March 23, 2003. Two series of artists’ prints go on display in February in the McAlpine and Eldon Galleries. The first is a group of nine carborundum prints by Hughie O’Donoghue, donated to the Museum by the artist in memory of Ilaria Bignamini. The prints are based on a large painting The Wrestlers and a version of that picture is also on display. O’Donoghue cites the classical sculpture and casts in the Ashmolean as his inspiration in making these works. Next door, a recent acquisition of the series A Fascist Flew Past by Georg Baselitz is on show. This is probably one of the most important series the artist has made in the past 20 years and is a technical milestone in printmaking.
