LONDON.- Camden Arts Centre presents a solo exhibition by American artist and filmmaker Kerry Tribe, on view from May 13 through July 10, 2011. Her large-scale projects in film, video, and sound form an ongoing investigation into memory, subjectivity and doubt. For this exhibition, Tribe shows her new body of work Dead Star Light commissioned as part of the 3 series - a collaboration between Camden Arts Center, London; Arnolfini, Bristol; and Modern Art Oxford, alongside other existing works.
Dead Star Light is comprised of three works which continue Tribe’s study of memory and it’s opposite, forgetting. Each work structurally engages with a different technology in innovative ways: 16mm film (Parnassius Mnemosyne); reelto-reel audio (Milton Torres Sees a Ghost); and video (The Last Soviet), all 2010. Every work relates to questions of personal and historic memory and shares common themes of erasure, flight, portraiture and the role of the viewer.
Dead Star Light is shown together with H.M. (2009), a work which also explores memory but from an individual, neurological perspective. This film installation, an experimental documentary about an anonymous amnesiac known within the scientific community simply as Patient H.M., sets up a structure whereby the viewer’s own power of memory is challenged.
Kerry Tribe’s exhibition is shown at the same time as a presentation of new work by Scottish artist, Christine Borland, in Gallery 3. Borland will expand on her current show at Glasgow Sculpture Studios where she is creating a new cast of a 19th century anatomical work as part of her ongoing interrogation of the relationship between art and forensic science.
Kerry Tribe was born in 1973 in Boston and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She studied at Brown University (1997) took part on the Whitney Museum of Art Independent Study Programme, New York (1998) and completed her MFA at University of California (2002).
