DUBAI.- La Galerie Nationale, a new gallery concept for the GCC specializing in original design art pieces created in the 20th century, today announces the unveiling of a unique and exclusive tapestry created by renowned 20th century designer Mathieu Matégot. This special design piece is on show from the 1st May at La Galerie Nationale, located in Alserkal Avenue.

This is the first piece of Matégot’s tapestries to be shown in the GCC, and represents a significant moment for the art and design world in the UAE. The tapestry, name “Linares”, dates from 1954, and is made from the finest quality wool, manufactured from the historic factory Aubusson (Atelier Tabar), France, the workshops of Aubusson. It is considered one of the finest examples of decorative wall-hanging in Europe at this time.

Matégot’s style is unmistakable in its pure abstraction, being lyrical and almost poetic in form. He invites the viewer to engage with his rhythmic coloured symphony, weaving colours against a signature stark black backdrop. Mathieu Matégot's organic forms and ground breaking and innovative techniques result in aesthetic and, above all, contemporary design.

Matégot’s activity as designer spanned a relativity short period, up to the beginning of the 1950's. By the 1960’s Matégot left furniture design to devote himself full time to tapestry work for which he won international acclaim, becoming one of leaders of the modern movement in French tapestry. His tapestries today hang in many major buildings.
