HOUSTON, TX.- Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Director Gary Tinterow today announced the appointment of Deborah L. Roldán as Assistant Director, Exhibitions, of the MFAH. Ms. Roldán, most recently curator and exhibition coordinator at the Fundación Juan March in Madrid, will join the staff of the MFAH on October 8. The newly created office will coordinate exhibition planning and relationships with sister institutions, with oversight of related publications, programming and installations.

“I am thrilled that Deborah Roldán is joining our team,” said Mr. Tinterow in announcing the appointment. “Over nearly 20 years as a curator and exhibition administrator, Deborah has demonstrated exceptional skill in managing the complex details of international exhibitions and curatorial projects. With the ambitious plans ahead for the MFAH, including major loan exhibitions of masterworks from the Prado, the Picasso Black and White exhibition with the Guggenheim and more still in the planning stages, Deborah’s role will be critical to assuring the continued success of the museum’s initiatives.”

Originally from New York, Ms. Roldán has resided in Madrid, Spain, since 2003. In 2006, she began work as curator and exhibition coordinator at the Fundación Juan March in Madrid, where she organized international loan exhibitions on modern and contemporary art and managed accompanying publications for the Fundación’s three venues, in Madrid, Palma and Cuenca. In addition, she has been a consultant to leading museums, including the Museo Picasso Malaga and the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid. Roldán was co-curator, with Gary Tinterow, of the 2002 Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition Manet/Velázquez: The French Taste for Spanish Painting. She was previously a research associate at the Metropolitan Museum in the European Paintings department from 1999 to 2003; prior to that, Ms. Roldán served as Senior Press Officer for the Metropolitan Museum.

Ms. Roldán has lectured and published on modern Spanish painting, in particular the work of Goya and José Gutiérrez Solana. She received her B.B.A. in Arts Administration from Baruch College, City University of New York; her M.A. in Art History from Hunter College, City University of New York; and is currently a Ph.D. candidate (A.B.D.) in Art History at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.

Ms. Roldán will relocate to Houston from Madrid.
