LONDON.- Seventeen modern sculptures, including works by Jacob Epstein and Elisabeth Frink, have been given to the Lightbox by Joan Hurst through the Art Fund.

The collection, which represents some of the most significant and influential artists in modern sculpture, is the first major gift to the Woking gallery.

Highlights included Sir Jacob Epstein's Fifth Portrait of Kathleen, a striking depiction of the artist's lover and future wife, and Elisabeth Frink's Horse and Rider, an early work based on her drawing series Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Speaking about the gift, Joan Hurst said, 'This gift of sculpture comprises works from my collection which are very dear to my heart, and I knew that the Art Fund would choose a fitting venue to receive this acquisition. I have always valued their expertise in helping find appropriate homes for works of art within national collections and I am so pleased that The Lightbox is to be the recipient.

'I do hope this collection of British sculpture will allow them to continue strengthening their Modern British area of interest, for which they are becoming increasingly well-known.'

Selected works from the collection are on display at the Lightbox until 25 August 2013.
