EDINBURGH.- A rare pottery Wemyss Ware sleeping pig, sold for £10,000, in the sale of a large collection of Wemyss Ware, the sought-after Scottish pottery, at a sale to be held at Lyon & Turnbull on Monday the 19th of August 2013 in Edinburgh.

The popular pottery was collected by the late H.M. the Queen Mother and made for the country houses of Britain at the turn of the 20th century. The Wemyss ware in the sale was 88% sold and 90 % by value. Other pieces that did well included a Wemyss Buttercup Tray at £1500, a large pig decorated with cabbage roses £1,100, a Wemyss cat £1,400 and a large Wemyss pig made £12,000.

Wemyss Ware was first produced by Robert Heron & Son in Kirkcaldy Scotland in the 1880s. John Mackie Director of Lyon and Turnbull said “Wemyss is a celebration of the finest in Scottish craft. It has been eagerly sought after by collectors since it first appeared in the late 19th century. This sleeping pig is extremely rare, I have only seen one of them before.”

Other items in the Scottish Design sale included a John Ednie table from The Taffner Collection which made £3,200 and a Ernest Archibald Taylor oak sideboard made £6,500. A pen and ink drawing by Jessie M. King made £6,200 and a silver and enamel belt buckle by her made £2,400.. An enamel and copper verso by Phoebe Anna Traquair made £5,600 and a portrait of ‘A Girl’ by the artist made £6,500. Finally a carved sycamore sculpture by John Robert Murray McCheyne titled Xoanon made £1,550.
