LOS ANGELES, CA.- Ibid is presenting an off-site solo show by young Viennese artist, Christian Rosa. This is his first solo show in Los Angeles. Also showing is a new feature length video by Colin Snapp.
Rosa, born 1982 in Sao Paolo, has been active and living in Vienna, Austria, since graduating from Akademie der bildenden Künste (2007-2012) where he studied under Daniel Richter. Christian Rosa is an artist who works across media but collage and painting are at the center of his practice. Rosa employs an approach to painting that reduces decision making to the limitations of his physical actions. There is an ongoing struggle to unlearn and rediscover, in which each piece is like a moment isolated from an ever-changing surface. Through this process, Rosa deconstructs, reconfigures and explores the future possibilities of the moment of failure. For his show at 4619 W Washington Blvd, Ibid features new paintings by Rosa produced in Los Angeles.
Christian Rosa is one of the prominent young artists working in Vienna whose energy and practice have an important role in the growing scene in which he is involved. Rosa not only exhibits as an artist but curates and organizes exhibitions, events, screenings and publications. Recent exhibitions that Christian Rosa has exhibited in includes: ReMap, Athens, GR; Brucennial 2012, New York, US, NeoSI: neue Situationistische Internationale, Kunstraum Schattendorf, DE; Blind Sculpture, Greene Naftali Gallery, New York, US; and Vienna Biennale 2010, Künstlerhaus, Vienna, AT.
In the gallery’s opposing space, a new feature length video by documentary filmmaker and artist, Colin Snapp, is being presented alongside a series of 35mm prints that act as an index of the American tour bus industry. The video, entitled NV Regional, was filmed at the Hoover Dam and portrays a constant stream of tourist as they walk up a switchbacked walkway to reach a viewpoint adjacent to the dam. These park visitors move as if they have seemingly no destination but nonetheless travel with intent, as if they were on a pilgrimage from and to something spiritual yet prosaic.
Colin Snapp was born on Lopez Island in 1982 and received a BFA in filmmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. Snapp has travelled extensively throughout Africa, Central America, Australia, and the Mediterranean working on documentaries on subjects ranging from architecture to immigration while assisting for National Geographic, Maha Productions, and BBC News. Recent exhibitions include The Journal Gallery, US, 1/9 Unosunove, IT, Jericho Ditch, US, Times Square AEO LED Billboard Commission, New York, US; Sculpture Center, New York, US, The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, US. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles and New York, US.
