NEW YORK, NY.- Santi Moix (b. 1960, Barcelona, Spain), has completed an 200-ft long mural in the Prada SoHo Epicenter, to be on view through August 31, 2013. The Catalan artist was commissioned to create a site-specific work incorporating the store’s existing temporary wallpaper, designed by New York design firm 2x4, depicting a reclining nude woman that stretches the entire length of the store. The changing wallpaper is an original feature of the store design by Rem Koolhaas/OMA. In collaboration with Prada, 2x4 has created over 20 different wallpaper installations since the store opened in 2001. Moix says of the work: “The idea was to try to create a kind of tattoo for the reclining giant. I approached the light and dark parts of the body as different kinds of landscapes. Chiaroscuro. Where there was darkness I tried I bring life and light. On her hair I created a wild sea. Parts of her body were like traveling over a great desert. Her hands and fingers -- where I began -- and her feet and toes -- where I ended -- were celebrations of beginnings and endings, of freedom. The length of this relaxed and melancholy body is transformed into a journey. The final image is a fantastical world in accordance with the beauty of the woman.” Moix explains that the work does not tell one particular story, but rather many stories melded together into a surrealistic narrative. Some of the stories, which include imagery of animals, old-world Europe, insect and aquatic worlds, are easy to decipher while others provoke a more thoughtful analysis. The mural captures a sensual fragmentation punctuated by scenes from history and literature - themes and a style that characterize Moix's oeuvre. His most recent exhibition at Paul Kasmin Gallery, Santi Moix on Huckleberry Finn: Watercolors and Wall Drawings, was accompanied by a Spanish-language translation of Mark Twain's classic text featuring color illustrations by Moix, published by Galaxia Gutenberg. In 2012, the artist recreated several wall drawings from Santi Moix on Huckleberry Finn: Watercolors and Wall Drawings in the Brooklyn Museum. He was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship in 2002. Moix has exhibited internationally including American Contemporary Printing Exhibition at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, Santi Moix on Don Quixote at Pace Prints in New York, Santi Moix: del fang a l’escultura at the Museu de Ceràmica in Barcelona, andSanti Moix at Galeria Carles Tache in Barcelona.
