EDINBURGH.- The Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture and the Royal Glasgow Institute present a tour-de-force solo exhibition of new work by Academician Kate Downie. Over three years in the making and being held simultaneously in Scotland’s two main cities, this dual-site exhibition presents an extensive body of work by Downie, created as a result of her time spent during artist residency positions in China.

In 2010 Kate Downie was awarded the RSA William Gillies Bequest Award to travel to Beijing and Shanghai to work with ink painting masters and develop her own practice in this unique medium. Following on from this experience, in 2011 Downie successfully applied for a position on the Red Gate Residency program, allowing her to return to China and develop her research. On display are large-scale scroll ink paintings, alongside oil paintings and extensive research material. As a dual-site exhibition, the RSA announced that additional work is available to view at the RGI Kelly Gallery in Glasgow, including a large wall drawing, created specifically for the exhibition.

Works are for sale and an accompanying publication is available. An artist’s talk is also planned. Three years in the making, this pan-national exhibition is a must-see.

Kate Downie is a UK landscape artist who makes drawings, painting and prints. Her first major solo show was in her native Aberdeen; since then her work has been exhibited throughout the world including exhibitions in China, Norway, Denmark, Holland, France and the USA.

President of the historically adventurous Society of Scottish Artists from 2004-2006, the artist became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 2008. In 2011 she participated in an international residency programme in Beijing to make new work and to study the work of Chinese ink painters.

The Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture has a proud tradition of promoting excellence in contemporary art and architecture in Scotland. Led by eminent artists and architects it supports the creation, understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts through exhibitions, artist opportunities and related educational talks and events. Re-establishing itself as a leading organisation for the visual arts in Scotland, it has successfully garnered a reputation for the strength of its engaging and diverse exhibitions and the fantastic opportunities it offers both established and emerging artists.
