JACKSONVILLE, FL.- The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville presents Abstraction over Time: The Paintings of Michael Goldberg. The first major exhibition to encompass the entire span of Goldbergʼs work opened September 21, 2013, and run through January 5, 2014. The exhibition consists of 38 major paintings spanning Goldberg’s career, including a number of never previously exhibited works belonging to the Michael Goldberg estate.

Co-curated by MOCA director Marcelle Polednik, Ph.D, and Curator Ben Thompson, Abstraction over Time is a full-scale retrospective of Goldberg’s work from his artistic beginnings in the 1940s through his last paintings of 2006 and 2007. The exhibition is accompanied by a full-scale publication. Catalogue contributors include Dr. Polednik; Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe, British New Abstractionist painter and art critic; Irving Sandler, American art critic and educator; and Karen Wilkin, New York-based independent curator and art critic.

“We chose objects that we felt best represented each episode of the artist’s career,” says Dr. Polednik. “Goldberg was steadfast, and yet so inventive. He made an indelible impact on contemporary art and abstract painting, one that has perhaps been overlooked. The goal of this exhibition is to change this by reappraising the artist’s significance.”

The exhibition, a case study in abstraction as a subject that has evolved over the years, proves that Goldberg played an integral role in the development of art in America. It is the first exhibition of his works in the Southeast, as well as the first major retrospective exhibition devoted solely to Goldberg in the country.

The exhibition is one of many cultural events drawing tourists to Jacksonville during the winter months.
