ATHENS.- Kalfayan Galleries is presenting the solo show of Nina Papaconstantinou titled “My dear Viscount, ”.

Nina Papaconstantinou is currently participating in the exhibition titled “Drawing Time, Reading Time” (curated by Claire Gilman) at The Drawing Center in New York. The main subject of the exhibition is the exploration of the relationship between drawing and writing as distinct yet interrelated gestures. Artists include, among others, Carl Andre, Pavel Buchler and Deb Sokolow.

In the exhibition “My dear Viscount, ”, Nina Papaconstantinou’s works are derived from various literary works. Among them is the epistolary novel “Les Liaisons dangereuses” by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, from which the title of the show is borrowed, and which the artist uses to draw two letters – that of Viscount de Valmont and Marquise de Merteuil - on fine handmade paper.

Papaconstantinou’s interest focuses on the absence of meaning and the disintegration of communication, as opposed to the hand-crafted effort that is needed to imprint each part that could possibly contribute to it. In these works writing conceals instead of revealing, either by erasing or accumulating, or by encoding in order to create another aspect of communication – one that is derived from abstraction, the trace or the mistake.

Nina Papaconstantinou (b. 1968, Athens) lives and works in Athens, Greece. She studied Greek Literature at the University of Athens (1992) and Visual Arts (Drawing) at Camberwell College of Arts, London (2001). Recent solo shows include: “Instead of Writing”, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (2011); “Between the Lines”, Martinos Antique  Art Gallery, Athens (2007).
