ST. MORITZ.- Galerie Gmurzynska announced the second solo exhibition at the gallery of Brooklyn based artist, Scott Campbell.
Emerging from the legendary New York group of artists of the early 2000s, consisting of Nate Lowman, Dan Colen and Dash Snow, Campbell has become an internationally recognised figure within the art world.
Known for his intricate works in a variety of unusual and exciting mediums, Campbell is at the forefront of young artists reintroducing craft and technique into art. The Smartest Things I Ever Did Were Foolish Things For Love is an exhibition dedicated to the theme of love.
Having recently married Sundance award winning film maker, screen writer and actress Lake Bell, Campbell was inspired to make a new body of work - love statements - which use a variety of mediums including paintings, watercolours and sculptures.
A site-specific installation of large Fuse Paintings, depicting roses, inhabits the entirety of the ground floor of the gallery. Created using designs drawn with gunpowder and then lit, they also continue his artistic exploration into drawings, iconography and cutting edge mediums.
In addition to his artistic career Campbell maintains an active practice as one of the most renowned tattoo artists in the world. His living designs can be seen on Marc Jacobs, Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Nan Goldin, Elizabeth Peyton, Carter Foster (tattoo designed by Ellsworth Kelly) and Richard Prince among many others.
Campbell was born in 1977 and raised in Louisiana and his practice has led him to live around the world, including Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles and South America.
Scott Campbell was invited by Marc Jacobs to participate in Louis Vuittons artist collaboration series for Spring/Summer 2011. Past participants have included Takashi Murakami and Richard Prince. He has also recently collaborated with Pirelli, designing a motorcycle, tires and accessories.
In February 2012 Rizzoli published a monograph on Campbell, If You Dont Belong, Dont Be Long, which explores tattooing, art and the human body.
In April 2014 Campbell will be honoured by Free Arts NYC charity at an event sponsored by Marc Jacobs.
