PITTSBURGH.- To mark its 20th anniversary, The Warhol, the most comprehensive single artista museum in the world, is undertaking a major redesign of its collection galleries. This rehang of the collection represents the most extensive most comprehensive re-examination of the museum’s collection of Warhol’s artwork and archival materials since it opened in 1994. Chronologically organized across five of the museum’s seven floors, the new installation will feature masterpieces from the collection alongside rarely seen artworks and archival material. The newly-organized galleries will officially open to the public in May 2014 to coincide with The Warhol’s 20th Anniversary.

Through its own projects and its collaborations with curators and scholars from around the world, The Warhol has been at the forefront of research on the artist’s career. This research is applied throughout the rehang.

Eric Shiner, director of The Warhol states, “We can’t wait to share the new look and feel of The Warhol with our visitors. Our goal is to both engage and educate our guests to that everyone leaves with a true understanding of who Andy was and why he matters so much. To keep the content fresh, the curatorial team will rotate artworks in all galleries on a frequent basis. It will be a fun experience and definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been to the museum in a while.”

Nicholas Chambers, The Milton Fine Curator of Art states, “The culmination of two years’ work by The Warhol team, the rehang is built upon scholarship and exhibitions that the museum have been recognized for internationally ever since its inauguration in 1994. It is, of course, impossible to reduce Warhol to a single overarching narrative and the rehang reflects this by emphasizing the artist’s multiplicity and the extraordinary diversity of his output. It brings together painting, film, television, music, immersive installations and numerous other aspects of Warhol’s life and work – revealing the manner in which Warhol fundamentally redefined our understanding who an artist could be.”

Curator of Film and Video, Geralyn Huxley adds, “We’re thrilled that visitors will now be able to explore Warhol’s work with the moving image in depth and in a comfortable gallery where over 70 full-length selections from Warhol’s films, video work, and television series will be presented on large monitors with touch screens that allow an easy choice of what to watch.”

The seventh floor will feature a group of artworks and archival objects that establish Pittsburgh as the starting point of Warhol’s life and work. This floor features newly uncovered material relating to Warhol’s childhood and pieces from the Warhola family collection of rare paintings and photographs.

Among the newly created installations are The Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a detailed interpretation of Warhol’s iconic multimedia performance; The Office, a space dedicated to Warhol’s studio environment; The Film and Video Gallery, multiple screens enabling visitors to view Warhol’s film, video, and television work on demand; and The Archives, a space where visitors will view the contents of select Warhol Time Capsules, and might catch a glimpse of the museum’s archivists at work. The museum’s second floor will be reserved for special exhibitions and thematic Warhol exhibitions.
