NEW YORK, NY.- This May, Sotheby’s New York is offering three distinct and exciting gallery shows by S|2, Sotheby’s private sale and Contemporary gallery: Jean Dubuffet: A Fine Line, Victor Vasarely: Op Star and Artists’ Jewellery By Louisa Guinness Gallery for S|2. Through these selling exhibitions, Sotheby’s is providing the opportunity to view and acquire a wide range of material including paintings, drawings, sculpture and jewels, which span over 70 years and range in price from $5,000 to $3 million.

All three selling exhibitions are open to the public beginning 3 May 2014 on the 2nd floor of their New York headquarters and coincide with Sotheby’s May sales of Impressionist & Modern Art, Contemporary Art, American Art and Latin American Art Modern & Contemporary.

Miety Heiden, Senior Vice President, Head of Contemporary Private Sales, North America, Sotheby’s, notes, “This is an exciting time for S|2; we have three unique shows open during one of our busiest months of the year. We have the first significant show of Vasarely’s work in a decade, major works by Dubuffet and an exciting collection of artist jewellery by Anish Kapoor, Claude Lalanne and Sophia Vari. We really have something for everyone!”

JEAN DUBUFFET: A FINE LINE
Jean Dubuffet: A Fine Line celebrates work by the father of Art Brut, Jean Dubuffet, and explores the boundary bridged by the artist between outsider and contemporary art. The exhibition follows the path of his emblematic line from the beginning of his career to the end of his life, showcasing pieces from each period in the artist’s oeuvre. Nomade aux traces de pas dans le sable from 1948 leads the exhibition and is completely fresh to the market. The present work is one of the best canvases from the Arab series of which there are only about 10 major works. This piece is the first major work from the series to come to market since Sotheby’s sold Arabe au fusil in 2009. Preceding that, there has been nothing since the early 1990’s when Sotheby’s set the record with Ils tiennent conseil. A further highlight is Le Pirate, a beautiful hourloupe sculpture whose desirable and unusual strong facial features and figurative qualities exemplify one of the most important moments in the artist’s career. Prices range from $50,000 to $3 million.

Victor Vasarely: Op Star showcases a selection of both explosively colorful and achromatic canvases that elegantly depict the third dimension on a two dimensional plane. Considered the father of Op Art, Vasarely and his work have become synonymous with the influential and important 20th century movement. The selling exhibition spans a period from the early 1940s to the late 1980s, including works that are fresh to the market. It has been a decade since a major exhibition of Vasarely’s work has been in the United States. Prices range from $40,000 to $500,000.

ARTISTS’ JEWELLERY BY LOUISA GUINNESS GALLERY FOR S|2
Sotheby’s partnered with the leading dealer in artist jewellery, Louisa Guinness, for a selling exhibition that showcases jewellery by three renowned Contemporary artists: Anish Kapoor, Claude Lalanne and Sophia Vari. This is Ms. Guinness’s first New York exhibition of artists’ jewellery, timed well with a recent surge of collecting interest and record prices at auction, most recently for the collection of Alexander Calder jewellery from the Makler Family Collection, which surpassed expectations last November. Prices range from $5,000 to $65,000.
