Early look at Jeremy Deller, We sit starving amidst our Gold....

LONDON.- 2014 marks Own Art’s 10th anniversary and to celebrate they have co-commissioned Jeremy Deller to produce a free artwork that can be enjoyed by all and owned by all.

The artwork consists of an animation which has been split into a series of free digital images. To receive one of 10,000 free digital limited edition artworks all you have to do is sign up to The Space newsletter here (anytime from now) and follow instructions in the confirmation email which will give you a link to Sedition to claim your work. Once you’ve done this, your artwork will be gifted to you on Wednesday 9th July. You can also watch the entire animation on Saturday 19th July when it will premiere simultaneously on screens across Westfield London and Westfield Stratford. This has been made possible by Exterion Media who are an ideal partner given their extensive digital footprint in London. From this date onwards, it will also be available to view on The Space.

The new animation - We sit starving amidst our Gold (William Morris visits the Venice Biennale in 2011 and gets to grips with Roman Abramovich’s yacht Luna) - is based on one of the pieces Deller first exhibited as part of English Magic at the British Pavilion in the Venice Biennale 2013.

English Magic reflects the roots of much of Deller’s work, focusing on British society – its people, icons, myths, folklore and its cultural and political history. William Morris permeates the exhibition, ‘in English Magic, the Turner Prize-winning artist brings Morris “back from the dead”, encouraging us to turn the mirror on ourselves and ask questions of the society in which we live’ (William Morris Gallery). Jeremy Deller’s approach is a perfect fit for the co- commission, championing the democratisation of art ownership and allowing thousands of people to begin their own art collections.
This co-commission between The Space and Own Art is supported by Sedition, who also share the values of all the partners to make it easier to access world class art.

Since the launch of Own Art, over 30,000 people have used the scheme to purchase more than £25 million worth of contemporary art and craft. Own Art is an Arts Council England initiative that makes buying contemporary art and craft easy and affordable by letting individuals spread the cost of their purchase over 10 months with the benefit of an interest free loan. As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations, Own Art customers will now be able to borrow anything from £100 to £2,500. The loan can also be used as a part-payment on higher value items, helping to promote more ambitious buying.
