NEW YORK, NY.- Le Livre Art Publishing announced a new series of monotypes by artist Paolo Canevari based on his recent series of paintings and sculptures, Monuments of the Memory. They will launch in late October 2014 in a temporary exhibition space in Lower Manhattan accompanied by a film by former Vice creative director Thalia Mavros, booklet featuring an interview with artist Shirin Neshat, and a scented candle designed by Canevari inspired by the work.

The twenty works present dramatic juxtapositions of varying jet-black geometric forms described by Neshat in her interview as “...directly conceptualizing the idea of void -absence- as if you are forcing your viewer to conjure what is missing”. The Monuments of the Memory monotype series presents a departure from his previous works, which have focused on political or religious themes, yet with ambiguous interpretations. It instead provides a response to what is described by the artist as the “visual pollution” created by an excess of information. Inspired in part by ancient religious efforts to visualize the intangible through art, these monotypes present an effort to create a revisited place for imagination and interpretation in simple, yet mysterious imagery.

Monuments of the Memory will debut in an empty residence in Lower Manhattan converted to serve as a kunsthalle. To pro- vide a contemplative space, viewers on timed entries will tour through spaces scented and illuminated by candles where each work within will be lit in sequence. The experience will then conclude with a screening of a new film by Thalia Mavros that serves as a semi-biographical portrait of Canevari and his work.

Paolo Canevari (b. 1963) is a classically trained Italian artist whose practice spans sculpture, drawing, painting and video. His work is included in the permanent collections of major institutions throughout the world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Selected exhibitions include the Drawing Center, New York; Johannesburg Art Gallery; the Liverpool Bi- ennial; the Macro Museo d’art Contemporanea, Rome; Museum of Modern Art, New York; the PS1 Center for Contemporary Art;
