MELBOURNE, FLA.- Around 250 lots of quality items from prominent south Florida estates and collections will be sold on Saturday, Nov. 22nd, by
Matheson’s Auctions, in the firm’s gallery located at 600 East New Haven Avenue in Melbourne, five minutes from the ocean. The auction will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time, with a preview Friday (from 10-3) and auction day (9-11 am).
Bidders will be treated to an eclectic mix of merchandise, ranging from paintings and sculptures to dazzling estate jewelry to gorgeous glassware to furniture items and more. Jewelry items will feature a stunning ladies’ ring with 3.51-carat pear-shaped diamond (GIA certified), a handsome men’s Breitling 18kt gold antique wristwatch, and an 18kt gold and diamond bangle bracelet.
Other star lots will include a lovely Lalique swan, a Kataro Shirayamadani Rookwood vase, a gilt bronze and ivory figure on an onyx base, an intricately cast Chinese bronze vase, a Boch Freres ceramic vase (Catteau), a colorful Dino Rosin torso glass sculpture, a Jacques Dressler Art Nouveau ceramic centerpiece and a Native American sterling, coral and turquoise cuff bracelet.
But original artwork will dominate the day’s action, constituting one-third of all items offered. Following are descriptions of just a handful of works that bidders can expect to see auction day.
•• An oil on canvas landscape painting by Leon Richet (Fr., 1847-1907), measuring 36 ½ inches by 25 inches and framed. Richet was a student of Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Pena (1807-1876) in France, and was known for his still-lifes, landscapes and genre paintings.
•• An oil on canvas marine rendering of ships and a bird on calm waters by Stanley Wingate Woodward (Mass., 1890-1970), 24 inches by 30 inches and framed. Woodward became renowned for his seascapes and marine paintings and authored two books on the subject.
• A visually arresting and stylized oil on canvas scene of a snow-covered mountain with trees and a green valley in the foreground by Croatian artist Edo Murtic (1921-2004). Murtric was famous in Yugoslavia both as an artist and an armed resistor of the Nazis.
• A detailed outdoor courtyard scene with figures and horses by Paul Fischer (Germ., 1864-1931), diminutive at 9 ¾ inches by 14 ¾ inches. Fischer moved from Germany to Mexico around 1890 to work as a doctor and became a noted, self-taught watercolorist.
• • An oil on board landscape scene at dusk, with trees and a pastel-lit sky, by Benson Bond Moore (D.C./Fla.,1882-1974), 9 inches by 12 inches and in a blondwood frame. Moore was influenced by The Barbizon School early on, then he became an Impressionist artist.
•• A landscape watercolor painting with figures by Paul B. Pascal (D.C./Fr., 1832-c. 1903), 18 inches by 26 inches, and matted and framed. Pascal was schooled both in the United States (Washington, D.C.) and France. He was known for his Middle Eastern landscapes.
• • An oil on canvas outdoor portrait of a man in period French dress by Ferdinand Roybet (Fr., 1840-1920), 14 inches by 10 ¼ inches, housed in an ornate, heavily carved frame. Roybet was a portrait and genre artist from the French School. He was also an engraver.
•• A watercolor and gouache Parisian street scene by Eugene Galien-Laloue (Fr., 1854-1941), 7 ½ inches by 12 inches. Galien-Laloue painted the countryside around Normandy and Seine-et-Marne, but he’s best known for his outdoor depictions of Paris.
Other artists in the auction will include Franz Bolinger, Eng Tay, Georges Spiro, Harrison (Haskay Yahne Yah) Begay, Corrine Jackson, Pierre Garcia Fons, Igor Galanin, Walter L. Greene, Mary Tillman Smith, W. Robert Tolley, Omar Torres, J. A.Kingston, Olive Ruth Holbert H. Flambeaux, Ruzicskay Gyorgy, Alfred Stevens and some illegibly signed works.
