DALLAS, TX.- A 92-piece Flatware Service by the celebrated Taxco silversmith Héctor Aguilar, in the Aztec pattern sold for $59,537 to lead
Heritage Auctions' Nov. 8 Silver & Vertu Signature® Auction in Dallas. The auction saw particularly strong results for mid-century pieces as well as silver smalls by an array of American and Continental silver makers.
"Fevered bidding was the rule of the day," said Karen Rigdon, Director of Fine Silver at Heritage. "Collectors pursued iconic flatware services and boldly designed hollowware, the auction finishing with strong prices for a selection of silver and gold match safes."
A Sterling Silver Water Pitcher made circa 1879-1891 by Tiffany & Co. decorated with repoussé maple leaves with inlaid copper veins, sold for $21,250 and a 124-piece Silver Flatware Service for 12 by Christofle, Paris, in the Commodore pattern brought nearly twice its estimate to end at $13,750.
A Reed & Barton six-piece Francis I Pattern Silver Tea and Coffee Service with Tray saw interest from eight bidders who pushed the sale price to $12,500. A 14-inch Gorham Silver and Cut-Glass Ewer, circa 1875, brought $10,000. An impressive H. Fres & Cie French Silver Wine Cooler, circa 1896, from Paris, France, sold for $9,375.
Among the objects of vertu, a stunning Continental Two-Color 18 karat Gold Music Box, circa 1880, sold for $11,250 and a Chinese 22 Karat Gold, Enamel and Jade Snuff Bottle, circa 1970, decorated with a hand-painted peafowl, sold to an East Coast bidder for $10,625.
Leading a selection of match safes, a 14 Karat Gold and Gold Quartz example made by Shreve & Co. of California, circa 1890, climbed to $15,000, fully five times its estimate. An American 14 karat Gold and Gold Quartz Match Safe, attributed to Shreve & Co., sold for $6,250. A unique Tiffany & Co. Silver and Coin Silver safe decorated with applied American silver coins atop a reptile skin pattered ground sold for $2,750.
