SAN ANTONIO, TX.- The San Antonio Museum of Art announces Anna Stothart has been appointed The Brown Foundation Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. Stothart will begin at the Museum in February. She is currently Assistant Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston (ICA) where she is the organizing curator of Adriana Varejão, an exhibition currently on view there and the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States. She has also acted as presenting curator for critically acclaimed exhibitions about by Ragnor Kjartansson and Jim Hodges.

“Anna brings a fresh perspective on contemporary art as well as deep interest and knowledge of contemporary Latin American art. I am excited to add her to the already vibrant mix of artists, galleries, programs, and curators already active in San Antonio. With Anna here, magic can happen,” said Director Katie Luber.

Stothart previously served as Curatorial Associate and Curatorial Assistant at the ICA, during which time she coordinated and assisted on multiple exhibitions, including Swoon: Anthropocene Extinction and Isaac Julien: Ten Thousand Waves. “I am thrilled to be joining the talented team at the San Antonio Museum of Art. I am looking forward to getting back to Texas and getting to know the local art scene as well as bringing some new and exciting projects with me,” said Stothart.

The Museum’s modern and contemporary collections spans the breadth of postwar art, including works by Hans Hofmann, Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Stella, Grayson Perry, Ivan Navarro, Kehinde Wiley, and Vic Muniz, including a particularly strong collection of San Antonio’s distinctive contributions to contemporary art. The Museum currently employs five curators for its collections: Ancient Art of the Mediterranean, Asian, American, Latin American, and European.
