NEW YORK, NY.- PULSE Contemporary Art Fair announces Elisabeth Condon as winner of the 2015 New York PULSE Prize. Since 2006, the PULSE Prize, a jury awarded $2,500 cash grant, has been given to an artist of distinction with a solo exhibition in a booth at the fair.
Emerson Dorsch (booth A2) presented a series of new works by Condon—including five large-scale mixed-media paintings, four ink on vellum drawings and a vibrant red toile wallpaper design, all inspired by the artist’s recent travels to Shanghai (and shipped directly from China to the fair). Inspired equally by Chinese ink wash painting and American modernism, the paintings feature elements of Shanghai’s iconic skyline against bright swaths of color offset by sparkling glitter. Located just inside the entrance to the fair, the works provide a bold entry point to PULSE. The dynamic presentation generated buzz from the moment the fair opened on Thursday March 5th, including the opening-day sale of Condon’s painting “Ethereal Body” and inquiries about wallpaper commissions.
The artist, known for her lush colorful paintings, is a Los Angeles native who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York and Tampa, Florida. She is the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, a Florida Individual Artist Grant and a Confucius Institute Understanding China Fellowship. Condon’s artwork has been exhibited at the National Art Museum of China, Beijing; SongZhuang Museum, Beijing; Shenghua Art Centre, Nanjing; 1285 Avenue of the Americas Art Gallery, New York; Hollywood Art & Culture Center, Hollywood, FL; Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, NC; Tampa Museum of Art, FL, Ft. Lauderdale Museum, FL and the Housatonic Museum of Art, Bridgeport, CT.
Condon was selected as the 2015 New York PULSE Prize winner by a jury of leading art experts including collector Lisa Anastos; writer Julie Baumgardner; Sherry Dobbin, Director of Public Art at the Times Square Alliance and JPMorgan Chase Art Collection curator Lisa Erf. “Elisabeth Condon’s new paintings are spectacular,” Erf said. “They convey a deep understanding of Chinese literati and postwar American painting traditions that’s surprisingly fresh and completely her own.”

As the 2015 PULSE New York Prize winner, Condon joins a list of distinguished past PULSE Prize winners including, most recently, Peruvian artist Andrea Canepa. In December, Canepa was awarded the Miami Beach 2014 PULSE Prize for her exhibition at booth of Spain’s Rosa Santos gallery, which featured an installation of abstracted South American flags.
