NEW YORK, NY.- Christies presents the sale of Prints & Multiples taking place on April 23-24. The two-day sale features over 280 lots, with a superb selection of Post-War and Contemporary editions, as well as a strong group of classic Modern and American prints. The sale is highlighted by Keith Harings Andy Mouse series (lot 250, estimate: $300,000 400,000) and features other major works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Edward Hopper, and David Hockney, among others.
Executed in 1985-86, during an extremely fertile time for Keith Haring, Andy Mouse pays tribute to his close friend, hero and mentor, Andy Warhol. Drawing on Warhol's legacy, and similar to Disney, Haring created a world for both adults and children, in which art became a visual vocabulary and one that could be shared with everyone, as seen here on the animated images of Andy Mouse. Believing that cartoon figures could be a component of fine art, and regarding Andy Warhol and Walt Disney as heroes, Haring's Andy Mouse bonds together the work of these three significant artists.
PABLO PICASSO (1881-1973) Lot 94 Nature morte sous la Lampe linocut in colors, 1962 Estimate: $120,000 180,000
Picasso re-invented the technique of linocut Rather than use separate blocks, he printed from just one; 'reduction' method. The uncarved block was printed in one flat color, and then cut and printed in each successive color, until in many cases there was little left of the original block. Highlighting the sale is a group of Picassos linocuts, including several portraits of his lover Jacqueline.
EDWARD HOPPER (1882-1967) Lot 4 House Tops etching, 1921 Estimate: $70,000 100,000
Edward Hopper was one of historys most successful reluctant printmakers. After having trouble finding galleries to exhibit his paintings and watercolors, Hopper turned to working as a commercial artist. Between 1913 and 1924 he did not sell a single unique work. One of Hoppers frequent subjects, he often portrayed the lone nude in a domestic setting with the window open and looking out on a metropolitan landscape. Hopper made three prints with this theme, House Tops, The Open Window (lot 6; estimate:$20,000 30,000) and East Side Interior (lot 7; 30,000 50,000)
From the Collection of Jon Gould
ANDY WARHOL (1928-1987) Lot 276 Endangered Species the complete set of ten screenprints in colors, 1983 Estimate: $400,000 600,000
Andy Warhol and Jon Gould were together between the years of 1981 and 1985 during which time Jon was the recipient of many gifts from Warhol including the present Endangered Species. The complete set of screenprints is being sold in its original portfolio box.
