LISBON.- Hellmichs work is an exercise in taxonomy rather than narrative. His work process is strongly related to Max Ernsts concept of optical provocations: source materials that elicit a personal reaction from the painter.
Hellmich keeps a collection of optical provocations, a large pictorial archive compiled with no other criteria but his own intuition. The archive mostly comprises photographs, images from discount store brochures, several pictures from the Internet and art historical sources.
His paintings begin as pure colour fields, but a gestural and rough abstract approach eventually leads to simple geometrical forms. At this point Hellmich selects the first representational elements from his pictorial archive. He then integrates these elements into his cosmos and works them over until he finds a balance between openness and closure, and abstract and figurative parameters.
Different paint qualities allow him to emphasize texture, form and geometry, with a rigorous investment in materiality. Paint is troweled, streaked, dripped, scumbled and otherwise given a suave, sensuously physical presence. This also allows him to exhibit the production of the painting itself.
Different perceptions of space are always present in his work, avoiding one unique and common perspective. Hellmich draws a parallel between the shielding provided by architectural spaces inside versus outside and the space between a painting and the person contemplating it.
