NEW CANAAN, CONN.- Heather Gaudio Fine Art announces its exhibition David Burdeny: Wanderlust, on view from April 18th through May 30th. This is Burdeny’s first solo exhibition at HGFA and features photography from his “Saudade” series.
Burdeny’s photography is informed by a curiosity and sense of discovery, which he achieved at an early age. Influenced by notable photographers Michael Kenna, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Fay Goodwin, Burdeny learned his craft as a young boy, developing black and white prints out of a makeshift darkroom in his bedroom closet. His Master’s degree in architecture and design has influenced the formalist approach to his compositions, carefully framing static elements and combining a deliberate use of low light and unusually long exposures to reveal that which may not be readily apparent to the naked eye. Some of Burdeny’s imagery extends past literal pictorial depictions to meditative or abstract interpretations of the landscapes he encounters.
“Saudade” is a unique Portuguese expression that has no counterpart in the English language. A loose translation would be the nostalgia for what once was, or a desire for what could be. It is a longing for something that does not exist, or of being anywhere but the present. Burdeny’s wanderlust takes him to all corners of the world to capture the indelible human experience on the global landscape with suggested monumentality. Shots of works in this exhibition were taken in China, Brazil, Indonesia and Japan.
