BERLIN.- Barbara Thumm announces the third gallery exhibition by Teresa Burga (born 1935 in Lima), who is one of the leading Peruvian female artists who have gained international recognition. The exhibition presents a large group of works which were exhibited at ICPNA (Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano) in Lima in 1966. It is the largest comprehensive exhibition of Teresa Burga‘s paintings of the Sixties, when Teresa Burga was a member of the artist group Arte Nuevo.

The Arte Nuevo group was created in 1966 by Luis Arias Vera, Gloria Gómez-Sánchez, Teresa Burga, Jaime Dávila, Víctor Delfín, Emilio Hernández Saavedra, José Tang, Armando Varela and Luis Zevallos Hetzel. It was the driving force of the artistic experimentation offensive (pop, op, settings and geometric art) that bursts in the mid-60‘s in Lima. With the support of art critic Juan Acha, Arte Nuevo Group is the main group of Peruvian avant-garde and critically confronts the official institutions and the traditional aesthetics.

The first manifest of Arte Nuevo Group was distributed in the streets against the First American Festival (First Biennial of Lima) in October 1966.

Teresa Burga noted in a text for the Arte Nuevo Group 40 year reunion in 2006: “During those years, a group of Peruvian artists discovered that individually we were producing works in which we tried to introduce new image representations in order to revitalize the formal syntax. We decided to work together and as the first presentation of a group we called Arte Nuevo, we produced a happening in El Ombligo de Adán. We realized it across the street from the palace, in a place that wasn‘t a gallery but simply a free space, which permitted us not to worry about the availability of exhibition spaces. I was finishing the period of dark atmospheres during which I utilized expressionist images based on traditional visual codes and support, and I began to introduce references to popular images, based on advertisements or magazine covers, in which I brought together geometric forms, graphic collages and written text. Human figure was loosing its primary role.”
