WASHINGTON, DC.- Several monumental Roots sculptures in steel and bronze by renowned Pennsylvania artist Steve Tobin have recently been planted on the grounds of the United States Botanical Gardens as part of the institution’s new exhibition titled Exposed: The Secret Life of Roots.

Situated on the USBG Terrace and front gardens, framing the White House Capitol building, the half dozen sculptures are from Tobin’s Steelroots and bronze Walking Roots series, and will be on view through winter of 2016. Included in the installation is a lyrical bronze pair of Walking Roots titled Romeo and Juliet, steel Dancing Roots and the enormous Steelroots that soars 40’ high. The sculptures tie in with an indoor exhibit and provide a statement as visitors enter the Conservatory.

Exposed: The Secret Life of Roots uses the work of agricultural ecologist Dr. Jerry Glover, photographer Jim Richardson and Tobin to showcase the importance of roots through visually stunning displays, root representations and educational materials.

Tobin is perhaps known for The Trinity Root, the first memorial to the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, which is a bronze casting of the stump and root system of the old sycamore tree that is credited for having “saved historic St. Paul’s Chapel” from falling debris as the Twin Towers came crashing to the earth. Permanently sited at the corner of Wall Street and Broadway, The Trinity Root was dedicated on the four year anniversary of the WTC attack, thus 2015 marks the ten year anniversary of this iconic sculpture, which receives 1.3 million visitors annually.
