SANTA FE, NM.- Patina Gallery announces Drawn to the Wall 2: The Medium is the Message, the second exhibition of the Drawn to the Wall series in which Patina presents prominent contemporary Santa Fe guest artists. Drawn to the Wall 2: The Medium is the Message is part of Patina Gallery’s 2015 Year of Couleur and is curated by owners Ivan and Allison Barnett. Drawn to the Wall 2 symphonizes the multidimensional works of artists Michael Motley, Isolde Kille, and Seth Anderson, while exhibiting their individual use of materials and how it is manifested in the surface of the pieces.

Well-known as a graphic designer, Michael Motley has exhibited in Santa Fe for three decades. His wall-sculptures dance with dimension, contrasting materials and shadows. Using organic elements such as graphite and found juniper roots, Motley’s pieces evoke a sense of mystery. “"I am inspired by the primal and primitiveness of ancient artifacts, tools, and weapons, and I am compelled to strive for that simplicity and presence in my work".” The sinuous roots are “"minimal in some ways, with an overlay of history".” This is Motley’s first public exhibition in over a decade.

German interdisciplinary artist Isolde Kille’s layered urban abstractions have an illusion of depth. Their shimmering spray paints and fragments of glass encourage reflection and the viewer finds themself in surprising places. “"I’'m very repetitive, and it adds up to a reality which connects to space and time".” Kille, who has shown in New York, Miami Beach, Berlin, and the Netherlands, prefers not to work in color. “"I reduce my palette to black and white only and simply let the two elements interact with each other".”

Seth Anderson examines the multidimensional in metaphor with sweeping black lines resting atop a medley of topography. The two-stepped wooden planes challenge the beholders’ perceptions of landscapes. Anderson is fascinated by the forms and functions of line and their relationship to how we navigate our lives. “"Our actions and paths we take in life are results of the genes we were born with in combination with our environment and physical space that we operate in".” He identifies these works as portraits, with the opposition of the rigid and the fluid representing the structure of who we are. Anderson has been a practicing artist for over twenty years.

The essence of philosopher Marshall McLuhan’s iconic phrase “"the medium is the message",” is that each medium, regardless of the communicated content, has its own inherent effects which are its underlying message. Using methods unique to each, the harmonized aesthetics of Michael Motley, Isolde Kille, and Seth Anderson invite the viewer to question space, time, volume, line, or shape. Now in its 16th year, Patina Gallery is best known for the exhibition of fine craft and design and exquisite art jewelry. Drawn to the Wall 2: The Medium is the Message is an opportunity for Patina to give back to the community and to represent some of Santa Fe’'s most talented artists.
