Antik A. S. Auction House in Istanbul to offer a masterpiece by Osman Hamdy

ISTANBUL.- The painting “In front of Green Mosque” by the master painter Osman Hamdy will be on sale at Antik A. S. Auction House, in Istanbul, on 14 May 2016.

The masterpiece, 185 x 100 cm. oil on canvas is one of the most well-known works of Osman Hamdy after the world renowned “Turtle Tamer.”

Osman Hamdy Bey had reflected the spirit of the old daily Ottoman lifestyle with an inspiring composition by depicting the ornaments of the Ottoman architecture and the details of its intricate craftsmanship together with 16 human figures. This work which is qualified as a great “masterpiece” by art historians, museum directors and experts of art will be on sale with an estimated price of 10 million Turkish Liras – 3.5 million USD…

This painting was completed and signed with old Ottoman script in the year 1882, the year in which Osman Hamdy had inaugurated the Mekteb-i Sanayi-i Nefise-i Şahane (today’s Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts).

This auction will present works by master artists of Turkish painting art, such as Halil Paşa, Hoca Ali Rıza, İbrahim Çallı, Naci Kalmukoğlu, Şevket Dağ, Hikmet Onat and a great Orientalist, Germain Fabius Brest. Silver items with tughra monogram from Ottoman dignified families, glass items of Beykoz, tombaks (gilt works) and fine examples of Ottoman caligraphic art will be on sale with some jewellery.

“Turquerie”
There is also a special section of artifacts which reflects the 18th Century European Fashion depicting the great admiration for anything Turkish. Porcelains with Ottoman attire, trays, paintings and works of art from 19th century will be on sale in this section which is named as “Turquerie”.

Glass vases with early period signatures of Gallé will create a great excitement among the collectors.

The works of art which will be on sale at the no. 291 Auction to be conducted by Turgay Artam can be viewed at Antik Palace Istanbul between 7 and 14 May 2016.
