LONDON.- Gregor Muir,
ICAs Executive Director, has been appointed the new Director of Collection, International Art at Tate. He will leave the ICA toward the end of the year, replacing Frances Morris, who was recently appointed Director of Tate Modern. Gregor will take up his position at Tate in January 2017.
Muir joined the ICA as Executive Director in early 2011. He has since played a significant role in re-establishing the ICA as Londons home of radical art and culture, working with artists from all over the world. Under his leadership, the ICA has gained renewed strength, both artistically and financially, as it approaches the future in good health.
Muir has overseen an ambitious cinema and events programme, alongside a critically acclaimed exhibition programme by artists such as Tauba Auerbach, Isa Genzken, Richard Hamilton, James Richards, Betty Woodman and Dennis Morris. During his tenure, the ICA has been at the forefront of cultural debate with its dedicated Culture Now talks series, which has seen Muir frequently chair conversations with artists including Lynda Benglis, Zhang Ding and Gilbert & George. He also initiated a series of Off-Site projects, in Birmingham, London and Hong Kong, and reactivated the Institute's unique history through a series of displays dedicated to landmark exhibitions, such as the Francis Bacon exhibition in 1955, and Cybernetic Serendipity, one of the earliest computer art exhibitions ever staged, also held at the ICA in 1968.
Muir said: Im delighted to be returning to Tate as the Director of Collection for International Art at a very exciting time with the opening of the new Tate Modern. While I have some work ahead of me at the ICA, Im incredibly proud of what the team has been able to achieve since I joined. As we celebrate the ICAs 70th anniversary this year, the Institute looks forward to an exciting future.
Alison Myners, Chair of the ICA Council, said: Gregor has been an exceptional Executive Director to the ICA. Under his leadership the ICA now thrives as one of the most exciting, pioneering arts organisations in the world. We congratulate him and wish him every success in his exciting new role with Tate and thank him for the huge part he has played in placing the ICA in a position of strength and vibrancy as we develop our plans for the Institute's future.
