BOSTON, MASS.- Michael Jacksons iconic red tunic worn during his appearance at the 8th American Music Awards on January 30, 1981 will be auctioned by Boston-based
RR Auction.
The elaborately designed and satin-lined top consists of a rhinestoned V-neck sweater with black bands on the upper sleeves and additional beadwork to the collar, cuffs, and waistband.
A concealed zipper runs along a seam from below the left armpit to left waistband. Below the sweater is a rhinestoned white silk dickie with tuxedo collar and a black bow tie.
Also includes Jacksons custom-made gray silk pants with rhinestone stripes on outside legs, with a sewn-in label reading, Michael. Jackson ultimately decided to wear a pair of blue jeans to the event.
The night proved to be a spectacular one for Jackson, whose debut solo album Off the Wall received accolades for Favorite Soul/R&B Artist and Album.
Jackson famously wore this tunic when posed alongside Diana Ross following the ceremony, a moment which affirmed Jackson as the new king of pop.
