Art Gallery of South Australia, generously supported by the Neilson Foundation. Titled Ever Blossoming Life II - A whole year per hour, Gold this four channel, moving image work transcends the boundaries of technology and art by providing each viewer with a unique experience.
Making its Australian premiere as part of the 2016 OzAsia Festival, Ever Blossoming Life II features a myriad of brilliantly coloured flowers that emerge, grow and blossom, wither and then fade away.
Art Gallery of South Australia, Associate Curator, Asian Art, Russel Kelty explains Ever Blossoming Life II is not a pre-recorded loop but instead a sophisticated algorithm programmed to create new images and compositions continuously in real time. This means that no image is ever seen twice a tender reminder of the endless cycle of life.
In what has become a signature of the Gallerys presentation of enduring subjects in art, this contemporary high-tech digital media work will be displayed alongside historic Japanese screens, prints and decorative art objects from the Art Gallerys collection.
Art Gallery of South Australia, Director, Nick Mitzevich says 'Dialogues between historical and contemporary works of art define the Art Gallerys current approach to collection displays. The unveiling of this acquisition is no exception, with Ever Blossoming Life II experienced alongside historic works from the Gallerys collection that capture life at its most fleeting.
Ever Blossoming Life II was created by teamLab in 2016. Although cutting edge in its execution, the work of art draws from hundreds of years of tradition that puts nature, in particular flowers and the four seasons, at the centre of Japanese art making and culture.
Referring to themselves as ultra-technologists, teamLab has developed an international reputation for large scale digital works and interactive immersive environments. Based in Tokyo the collaborative is composed of specialists and professionals from various fields such as artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, architects and web designers whose collective aim is to achieve a balance between art, science, technology and creativity.
