STOCKHOLM.- Lars Bohman Gallery is presenting new works by Barbara Probst. The exhibition 12 Moments is the artist’s third solo exhibition at the gallery.

Throughout her artistry Probst has examined photography as a medium and as a practice. She introduces a space where the use of imagery creates a sense of familiarity, while simultaneously persisted as elusive. The works give rise to a diverse set of associations extending across surveillance film, fashion photography and street photography. There are also references to the French New Wave and Italian neorealism throughout her work. In some sense it is at this intersection, between the films moving picture and the static photograph that her images activate. She charges from the photographs inherent limitations in a deconstructive examination of the medium and its truth claims. Probst moves back and forth between various scenes and themes, challenging the boundaries between reality and fiction, the documentary and the staged. Her work reveals creative process while the displacements evoke a sense of doubt in the viewer.

Probst's background in sculpture becomes noticeable here partly by the strong spatial design of the arranged motives, but also through the photographs strongly accentuated spatiality within their installation. The viewer is moved around a scene of frozen moments in which the search for a logical chronology is reduced in favour of a simultaneous experience of the works in their entity.

Barbara Probst was born in 1964 in Munich, Germany, now living and working in New York and Munich. Probst studied at the Akademie der Bildende Kunste, Munich, 1984 - 1990 and at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf, 1988 - 1989.
