Belle Epoque paintings soar in Heritage's Fine European Art auction
Louis Marie de Schryver (French, 1862-1942), Paris - La rue du Havre, 1893. Oil on canvas, 29 x 36-1/2 inches.

DALLAS, TX.- The saleroom witnessed lively bidding for William Adolphe Bouguereau's Bohémienne au tambor de Basque, which realized $334,000, and pushed the total auction value over $2 million in Heritage Auctions' Dec. 7 Fine European Art auction in Dallas.

Jean Béraud's Sur les Champs Élysées, circa 1892, fetched $322,000, while Louis Marie de Schryver's Paris – La rue du Havre, circa 1893, sold for $225,000.

"The energy of turn-of-the-century Paris is evident in several of the paintings in this auction," Heritage Auctions Consignment Director for European Art Ariana Hartsock said. "We are proud to have offered a collection that drew such strong interest from so many knowledgeable collectors of French art."

Bidders drove the price for one of Edgar Degas' last-known portraits, Esquisse pour un portrait de M. et Mme. Louis Rouart, circa 1904, to $150,000, while Paul César Helleu's Madame Helleu aboard the yacht 'Bird' fetched $125,000. The six-figure returns did not stop there, as Gustave Courbet's 1872 Le Lavoir brought in $112,500, and another Bouguereau offering, his 1879 La frileuse, realized $100,000.

Other top lots included, but were not limited to:

· Eugène Louis Boudin's Laveuses au bord de la Touques: $87,500

· Charles Amable Lenoir's Beauty in a garden: $55,000

· Portrait of Master William Cavendish, by Sir Joshua Reynolds: $38,750

· Pierre Eugène Montezin's Geraniums: $30,000
