LOS ANGELES, CA.- Shoebox Projects announces its second artist-in-resident; sculptor and installation artist Susan Amorde. Susan is set to take over this experimental art space in the Brewery Arts Complex.

Best known for her skillful interpretations of the emotional baggage each of us carry, Susan uses vintage suitcases and other luggage to create sculptures that invite the viewer to consider the existential weight of our worries and sorrows. During the Shoebox Projects residency, Susan plans to experiment with new ways of working within the context of her metaphor.

“Explorations stretching further into surrealism with added real animal teeth, antlers and some other more figurative objects mixed with the metaphorical suitcases are definitely on the table,” Susan says. “Transforming an entire space during the month will be challenging. I am looking forward to seeing what happens and am open to new ideas as they emerge from being in a different environment.”

Susan Amorde is a figure sculptor and installation artist who uses an expressive and often whimsical style to explore the human form and emotions with both personal and universal themes, such as: literal, figurative and emotional “baggage”; interpersonal relationships; identity and body image. For her figurative work she primarily works from live models in terra cotta, wax, bronze, and mix media, and her installations are created from found objects and mixed media. Born in Washington, D.C., Susan grew up in Los Angeles, and has a BFA from California State University, Long Beach. Her sculpture is exhibited in local and national exhibitions, and is in private collections across the country. Susan currently lives in Los Angeles and her studio is at 1019 West in Inglewood.
