LONDON.- Remote Scottish Postboxes is Martin Parrs first major contribution to landscape photography. Published here for the first time, the photographs in this new book were taken between 2004 2010 on the Scottish mainland and outlying islands of Orkney, Shetland, Barra, Lewis and Islay.
On a number of occasions, Parr and his wife, Susie, holidayed in Scotland stopping frequently during their travels to photograph the local Royal Mail postboxes. Often, they would revisit remote outposts, going miles out of their way, so that Parr could capture the postboxes at a particular time of day to take advantage of the best light. Through Parrs photographs, these isolated, red outposts of civilisation each take on a character and personality of their own, against the lonely yet beautiful Scottish backdrop.
When you are in the middle of nowhere, in a bleak landscape and in wild weather, these little post boxes are strangely comforting, a sign that other people are around, that life is going on, and that you are connected to the world - Susie Parr
Remote Scottish Postboxes is presented as an 88-page book, with maps and co-ordinates alongside the photographs and a short text by Susie Parr. It is also available as a postcard book, comprised of 12 unbound postcards. Both books are presented in a specially designed box.
