Elaine Bedell, Southbank Centre’s Chief Executive said: “It is a huge honour for Southbank Centre that Venice Biennale has appointed Ralph as its next curator. Ralph has been instrumental in driving forward the Hayward Gallery’s reputation over the last eleven years through his curation of critically acclaimed, innovative and engaging shows. We are very much looking forward to seeing Ralph’s curation of the Venice Biennale in two years time.”

In a statement released by La Biennale di Venezia, its President Paolo Baratta said: "The appointment of Ralph Rugoff confirms the Biennale's primary goal, to qualify the Exhibition as a place of encounter between the visitors, the art and the artists. An Exhibition engaging the viewers directly with the artworks in such a way that memory, the unexpected, the possible provocation, the new and the different can stimulate their visions, their minds and their emotions, and offer them the opportunity for a direct experience."
