SculptureCenter appoints Sohrab Mohebbi as Curator
Mohebbi joins SculptureCenter after four years as Associate Curator at REDCAT gallery in Los Angeles.

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY.- SculptureCenter announced the appointment of Sohrab Mohebbi to the position of Curator effective April 1, 2018. As Curator, Mohebbi will be responsible for organizing exhibitions, public programs, and publications. Mohebbi joins SculptureCenter, an institution leading the conversation on contemporary art and respected for its independent vision, intellectual rigor, and dedication to commissioning new work by emerging and established artists.

Mohebbi joins SculptureCenter after four years as Associate Curator at REDCAT gallery in Los Angeles. He succeeds Ruba Katrib who is now Curator at MoMA/PS1.

“Sohrab brings great energy, intellect, and passion to his work with art and artists.” said Executive Director and Chief Curator Mary Ceruti of his appointment. “His creative yet rigorous approach to exhibition-making, coupled with his collaborative spirit and international network has distinguished him as an important curatorial voice. He is an engaged thinker who can position emerging ideas within a broader context and do so with clarity.”

Mohebbi states: “It is a great honor for me to join SculptureCenter, a truly beloved art institution with a rich history and a long legacy of supporting artists and their work. SculptureCenter’s commitment to creating a space for free and experimental artistic practice and independent thinking is crucial to the city’s institutional landscape and the field at large.”

Mohebbi joined REDCAT gallery in 2013 and has organized solo exhibitions with Dave Hullfish Bailey, Tamara Henderson, John Knight, and Falke Pisano among many others. His innovative and experimental group exhibitions include: It is obvious from the map (co-curated with Thomas Keenan) which examined the role of maps and map-making in the movements of large numbers of people from the conflict zones of the Middle East and Africa toward Europe and Hotel Theory for which he and cocurator Ruth Estevez received the 2013 The Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award. Hotel Theory focused on the performance of theory in contemporary art and considered theory as an art form through an exhibition and series of almost two dozen live performances and events.

Prior to joining REDCAT, Mohebbi was a Curatorial Fellow at Queens Museum and then Curatorial Assistant at the Hammer Museum at UCLA. Mohebbi received an M.A. from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College and a BFA in Photography from Tehran Art University. Mohebbi is the recipient of 2012 Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Program. His writings have been published in Bidoun magazine, where he is a contributing editor, as well Art Agenda, Modern Painters, among others. He is an advisor at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam and has organized exhibitions and programs for organizations around the world including the Walker Art Center, High Desert Test Sites, SALT Istanbul, Rodeo gallery, and Center for Historical Reenactments.
