FRANKLIN, MASS.- Paintings attributed to the Dutch master Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), the Czechoslovakian Cubist-Fauvist Emil Filla (1882-1953) and Russian Expressionist Alexej von Jawlensky (1864-1941) are just a few of the artworks up for bid in a live and internet auction slated for Thursday, September 6th, by Woodshed Art Auctions, starting at 5:30 pm Eastern time.

The 237-lot Hidden Masterpieces Art Auction will be held live in Woodshed Art Auctions’ 500 Gallery, at 475 Franklin Village Drive in Franklin, with a preview exhibition that will begin on Wednesday, August 29th. The color catalog can be viewed now at woodshedartauctions.com, as well as on the bidding platform LiveAuctioneers.com. People can register to bid on either site.

In addition to the artworks from the three abovenamed artists, the sale will also feature large canvases signed Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, Helen Frankenthaler, Willem de Kooning and Oswaldo Guyasamin. Other prime works include sketches and paintings attributed to Claude Monet, Andy Warhol, Wifredo Lam, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

“We have a selection of very strong original paintings on canvas this month, reflecting the growth of our auction house and the confidence of our consignors,” said Bruce Wood of Woodshed Art Auctions. “Bidders will be dazzled by the wide array of rare and new-to-the-market paintings and drawings pulled from private collections in Europe and the Americas.”

The gouache on artist board signed “Vincent” and attributed to van Gogh is titled Bedroom at Arles and has a pre-sale estimate of $100,000-$150,000. Significantly, the painting is marked verso with the collector’s stamp of Dr. Paul Gachet (van Gogh’s physician) and his son. Van Gogh painted three authenticated oil versions of his bedroom in Arles. This study, 12 ¼ inches by 15 ½ inches (sight), bears striking similarities to the first two oil versions of the composition.

Alexej von Jawlensky’s signed oil on canvas attribution titled Portrait of a Woman measures 19 inches by 19 inches (framed) and is estimated to bring $50,000-$70,000. Jawlensky was born in Russia but worked in Germany, where he was a member of the New Munich Artists Association, The Blue Rider and The Blue Four. The painting in the sale was recently cleaned and retouched.

The oil on board attributed to Emil Filla is titled Oval Still Life and is expected to command $45,000-$60,000. The work, on an oval stretcher with a rope frame, is signed and dated “1923” bottom right and has a shipping sticker dated 1924 verso. Filla aligned himself with a variety of movements, most notably Cubism. He founded the Group of Visual Artists, a Cubist collective.

Andy Warhol (Am., 1928-1987) is represented multiple times in the auction. Works attributed to the Pop Art icon include a mixed media (acrylic, silkscreen and ink) on paper portrait of Rolling Stones front-man Mick Jagger, signed lower right and verso (est. $40,000-$50,000); and a mixed media (acrylic, ink and others) stylized rendering of a Coca-Cola Bottle (est. $20,000-$30,000).

An oil on canvas abstract composition attributed to Franz Kline (Am., 1910-1962), 31 inches by 60 ½ inches (framed), is estimated at $150,000-$200,000. Kline was a key figure in the Abstract Expressionist and Avant-Garde movements. His emphatic black and white paintings (like the one in this auction) were set down with confidence and exemplified Action Painting achievements.

Who wouldn’t want a painting signed Jean-Michel Basquiat (Am., 1960-1988) or Jackson Pollock (Am., 1912-1956)? The acrylic on canvas portrait attributed to Basquiat, titled Silhouette on Black and White Background, measuring 33 inches by 24 ¾ inches (framed), should knock down for $75,000-$100,000; while the Pollock attribution, an enamel on canvas work titled Red, Yellow, Orange and Black Drip, 36 inches by 24 inches (sight), should realize $60,000-$80,000.

An untitled oil on board maritime scene attributed to William Henry (W.H.) Johnson (Am., 1901-1970), painted in the Expressionist style Johnson experimented with in France (but atypical of his normal oeuvre devoted to depictions of black men and women), signed bottom right, has an estimate of $35,000-$45,000); while an unframed gouache on paper attributed to Fernand Leger (Fr., 1881-1955), titled Female Faces, signed with initials, should hit $20,000-$30,000.

An oil on canvas abstract composition done in the manner of the Joan Miro (Sp., 1893-1983), impressive at 40 ½ inches by 53 inches (framed), signed upper right and verso, with a decorative stamp and seal of Fundacio Joan Miro on verso, should finish at $30,000-$50,000. Also, an oil painting on three sheets of laid paper laid to board by Massimo Campigli (It., 1895-1971), titled Women on a staircase, signed and framed under museum glass, is estimated at $20,000-$40,000.

An oil on paper Grey Still Life attributed to American painter-photographer Ralston Crawford (1906-1978), artist signed and measuring 24 inches by 18 inches, is expected to change hands for $12,000-$18,000. Also, an oil on canvas painting by “second-generation” abstract Expressionist Michael Goldberg (Am., 1924-2007), titled Dune House No. 2, signed on the bottom and titled and dated (“1960”) on verso, measuring 24 inches by 20 inches, should reach $8,000-$12,000.
