NEW YORK, NY.- Brooklyn is a place of deep pride: The Brooklyn Dodgers, Nathan's Famous Hot Dogs, the Cyclone, and, of course, the world's most famous bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge. These are just a few of the urban icons that contribute to the romance for Brooklyn with all its contradictions that have been chronicled in countless novels, poems, songs, films, and photographs that have made it the legend it is today.

Today, the borough has transformed itself into a cultural capital with more artists, designers, architects, filmmakers, dancers, writers, and musicians living there than anywhere else. Brooklyn is an attitude. It's got more grit, chutzpah, and moxie than anyplace else. And, unlike its neighbor across the river, Manhattan, it has a great sense of humor about itself.

From Coney Island, to Prospect Park, to Red Hook, to Williamsburg, the avant-garde spirit of the city's biggest borough comes alive in Marla Hamburg Kennedy's Brooklyn Photographs Now (Rizzoli, October 2018). This exquisitely curated collection of images -- many never-before-published -- by emerging and established artists captures the unique characteristics of present-day Brooklyn while offering the artists' perspective on how they view these vibrant neighborhoods.

This remarkable collection of images is a testimony to Brooklyn's unquenchable dynamism: its refusal to stop changing, as well as an unwillingness to shed its more traditional aspects. Shots of Brooklyn's new high-rise verticality, either in celebration or dismay, an array of aluminum-sided bungalows and brick row houses, backyards and alleys, and delis and pizzerias contribute to Brooklyn's iconic charms.

This imagery, juxtaposed with dignified portraits of more famous monuments and landmarks, like the Brooklyn Museum or Coney Island's Wonder Wheel, celebrate the borough that has come into its own!

With captivating works by acclaimed photographers such as Mark Seliger, Jamel Shabazz, Mitch Epstein, Mathieu Bitton, and Joel Meyerowitz and texts by Phillip Lopate and Anne Pasternak, Brooklyn Photographs Now is the perfect gift for the photo lover, Brooklynite, and New York City tourist alike.

Marla Hamburg Kennedy is a leading dealer and advisor for 20th and 21st century art with an emphasis on contemporary painting and photography. She is the author of several books, including Rizzoli's New York: A Photographer's City. Phillip Lopate is a film critic, essayist, fiction writer, poet, teacher, and native Brooklynite. Anne Pasternak is an art critic and curator and is the current Shelby White and Leon Levy Director at the Brooklyn Museum.
